What is the Process of SSB for NDA?

5 Days Procedure of AFSB Interview

Day 1: On screening day at the Service Selection Board (Army/Navy/Airforce), you are advised to arrive at the railway station by 6:45 AM – 7 AM. After being welcomed and briefed about the relevant rules and regulations, you will be required to fill out some forms. Although there is a chance to have breakfast, it is better to consume your meal prior to this stage as the testing procedure may extend for a considerable time. Finishing these paperwork procedures marks your first test of the SSB interview.

Following PPDT, the results of the selection process are released by the afternoon. For those who have been chosen, they are ushered back to the testing room for document verification; whereas, unsuccessful applicants are brought back to the railway station. However, those selected for entry but having issues with their documents, they shall be sent away or told to show up at a later batch upon completion of their documents. After this step is completed, the document inspection is set in motion straight away.

Day 2, 3, and 4: Your GTO and Interview tests could be scheduled for any of the days at AFSB. You will likely get a day’s break in between as well. There may be a situation where you have both on the same day, but there is no clash in timing. In such cases, you can go directly from one to the other. Don’t forget to bring all essential documents like folders, certificates, and proofs related to your academics and extracurricular activities when you appear for your interview. Be sure that whatever is mentioned in the PIQ form is supported by proper evidence; don’t rely on saying something without proof. The interview is generally a 30 minutes-60 minutes procedure. You’ll be informed well in advance through a notice placed on the notice board about the schedule of your tests.

Day 5: Today is the conference day, and some individuals may have an interview or GTO session prior. This is the place for all board members to assemble wearing their uniforms, where everyone’s results are discussed. You’ll be called in, and the process usually only takes around a minute – though it may take longer for certain cases. After the conversations have concluded, lunchtime commences with result announcements. The ones who pass get to remain for further formalities and those who don’t are taken back to the train station.

Flying Branch Candidates Only: Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS) will be replacing the PABT test and instruments which had been used for years. It remains uncertain when the CPSS test will completely take the place of PABT. As with PABT, only one attempt is allowed to pass the CPSS examination; if failed, being ineligible to fly in any branch of the armed forces – Air Force, Army, Navy, or Coast Guard. This sole opportunity must be taken advantage of as CPSS puts greater emphasis on the psychomotor skills and cognitive abilities of aspirants. It ensures objectivity in results. The system will be used to screen pilots for IAF, Army, Navy, and Coast Guard.

It has 2 parts.

  1. As a first step, you will be asked to answer MCQ questions. You will be taught how to read six types of dials found in aircraft, and based on that, you will be asked a number of MCQs, including dial reading, pattern matching, basic maths, and IQ tests. It’s fairly straightforward, and anyone with elementary school physics knowledge will be able to pass it.
  2. The 1st test will require you to sit in a CPSS machine, which functions like an aircraft cockpit with a joystick, pedals, and lever. A screen is found in front of you where you will partake in multiple gaming activities reminiscent of video games. Hand-leg coordination is key for the successful completion of this test; those with experience driving or playing video games will likely find it easy. You are allowed three attempts for each game, and your best score from the three tries will be considered as your result. Mistakes can be rectified in succeeding attempts.

CPSS is a simple test. Extensive instructions are provided before both tests so there won’t be any confusion. So don’t worry, you should focus more on the SSB part as that is the most challenging part.

Medical: A medical appointment may not take place immediately following selection in the SSB. You’ll be given a date.
